General Country data

The main cultural assets of Georgia

Georgia is an old country full of cultural and natural heritage. Located in between Europe and Asia, the country always has lived on the crossroads where the larger civilizations met. This resulted in the establishment of the original Georgian culture and language, which became a part of the heritage as well. The astonishing cultural landscapes, stems from the harmonious coexistence of humans with nature and are spread throughout the country. This little country is rich with both tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Thousands of cultural heritage assets, both tangible and intangible, have already been registered.

The legal framework on cultural heritage conservation

Alongside with the Cultural Strategy 2025 of Georgia, The Law on Cultural Heritage of Georgia (2007), The Law on the Import and Export of Cultural Goods (2001), The Law on Museums (2001), The Law on Culture (1997) and The Law on the System of Protected Areas, serve as the main guiding legal documents for cultural heritage conservation and management in the country. Further, the Cultural and Natural Heritage Code draft has been elaborated, which is still under the negotiation between different governmental bodies to be submitted to the Parliament of Georgia.

The cultural and natural sites on the World Heritage List

The tangible and intangible cultural heritage of Georgia is represented on the UNESCO’s heritage lists, such as temples and landscapes as well as performing arts and traditional knowledge, while the natural heritage of Georgia is somewhat under-represented on the World Heritage List. (See: Properties inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List).
